Pinterest How To Guide – Getting Started With Pinterest

This Pinterest How-To Guide has 4 Parts:
1) Getting Started
2) Using Pinterest
3) Following Pinterest
4) Pinterest Marketing Ideas

Part 1: Getting Started With Pinterest

Pinterest is a relatively new social networking site with a twist. It’s all about creating and sharing collections of images that you find around the web or create yourself. They call it themselves a “Virtual Pin Board’ and their members use it to organize recipes, plan home improvement projects, share favorite books, plan weddings and more. You’re only limited by your imagination.

Currently, to join Pinterest, you need to be invited. Without an account, you can browse and search what people a “pinning”, but you can’t enjoy any of the functionality.

Below is an example of what you might see by browsing the site without an account. However, if you sign up, you can follow specific people with interests common to yours. So if you’re not interest in makeup or beading, you can choose to follow people with other interests.

Pinterest currently has about 4 million users and about 80% of their audience is female, but there is definitely male representation on the site. With this large audience, it’s relatively easy to secure an invitation and get started.

Here are two main ways you can get into Pinterest…

Method #1: Request an Invite from Pinterest

If you go to Pinterest.com, you can click the “Request an Invite” button.

On the next page, enter your email address and click “Request Invitation”.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll be greeted by this message.

How long it takes to get an invitation is unknown, so the best thing to do is actually try Method #2 and contact a member directly for an invite.

Method #2: Contact a Member Directly for an Invite

If you’re active on other social media sites, chances are, you know somebody who is using Pinterest. Have a look on Facebook and if you see something like this, ask that person for an invitation.

Or if you look at someone’s timeline, you might see a section dedicated to their Pinterest activity.

On Twitter, a Pinterest update looks something like this:

When you find someone using Pinterest, send them a message directly and ask if they don’t mind sending you an invitation. All that person has to do is log into their account, fill out the “Invite Friends Form” and then you’ll get the information via email. They can also choose to invite you by Facebook, so if that’s the case, you’ll get the invite through Facebook.

We’ll demonstrate the email process in the next section.

Accepting Your Pinterest Invitation

After your friend sends the invite, you’ll get an email that looks like this. The subject line will be “Check out my stuff on Pinterest”:

Click the link at the bottom of the email you received (we’ve blacked out the sensitive information in the link in our sample) and you can start creating your account.

Side note, if you’re invited through Facebook, you’ll see the invitation in your Notifications and it might look something like this:

But let’s keep going through the process of accepting an email invite.

Setting Up Your Account

Once you click the link in the invitation email, you’ll see a page that looks like this:

In order to use Pinterest, you have to either register with a Facebook or Twitter account. They say they do this because they believe it makes it easier for people to find you, cuts down on spam and you can easily share your updates with those sites. It doesn’t matter if you start by registering with Facebook or Twitter, you can link both accounts at a later date.

We’re going to go through the process by signing up with Twitter, so we click “Or sign up with Twitter.”

Don’t worry about Pinterest doing things with your Twitter account that you don’t want it to. You have complete control and if you don’t want Pinterest to update anything on Twitter, you can set it that way too. If it sounds good, click “Sign In” as shown above.

On the next page, you’ll see that Pinterest automatically grabbed your avatar (we’ve blacked out this one for privacy reasons). Then you can choose a username, add your email address and password.

Click “Create Account” when you’re done. Next you’ll be presented with 28 categories that you can choose as being related to your interests. Pinterest uses this information to automatically follow people with common interests. You have to pick at least one category to continue.

When you’re done choosing, click “Follow People” at the bottom of the screen.

On the page page, you’ll be able to see who you are now following and remove them, if you prefer. If everything’s a-okay then you can start creating boards.

On the next page, you’ll see five suggested boards you can create. You can edit these, delete these or do whatever you want. If you’re not sure about all the boards you’re going to create, you can just start with one and add as many as you want later. You can also see further suggestions to the right. If you click one of those, it will automatically be added to your list.

Click “Create” when you’re done deciding on your boards. Again, you can add whatever you want or delete any boards later too. Now you’re ready to get started with Pinterest!

Sources for Information on Local Businesses

47% of adults who get news and information about local businesses other than restaurants and bars say they rely on the internet to do so, ahead of print newspapers (29%), word of mouth (22%), local TV (8%), local radio (5%), printed newsletters (4%), and mobile phones (1%), according to a December 2011 report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

What Is Considered A Mobile Friendly Website?

As of 2010, less than 1% of all business websites are “not” mobile compatible. Below are the characteristics that make up a mobile friendly site.

1. Loads fast
- 3G/4G is not the most reliable, stable internet connections
- Only 21% of US Mobile users have unlimited data plans
- “Bloated” sites cost them money to access

2. Easy to read
- The average mobile phone screen size is 320 pixels by 480 pixels (153,600 sq. px)
- The least common denominator for desktop PC is 786,432 sq px (1024 x 768)

- How does a site look with 1/5th the font size?

3. Easy to navigate
- Your menu items are confined to very limited space
- Meaning you get fewer of them
- And they must be big enough to accommodate people with larger fingers

4. Minimum scrolling
- Not just vertically
- But also horizontally (should be none at all)

5. Avoids flash
- All apple powered mobile devices do not, and will never support flash
- Flash sites are invisible to Iphones

6. Mobile specific consumer behavior
- Click to call button
- Most important information should be easily accessible

The Importance Of Social Media For Offline Business

There are literally thousands of articles online speaking about the importance of social media for online businesses.  A simple Google search will likely turn up more information than anybody could want regarding how best to use Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Facebook for the purpose of online business – and these social networking sites are merely the tip of the iceberg.  There are several other, lesser-known social media sites that can factor into the game for online businesses, as well.

It’s obvious why social media sites are important for online business.  It’s a free, efficient way of marketing to the virtual crowd.  After all, if your business is virtual, then it only makes sense that you should be advertising where the virtual populace goes to hang out and chat with friends.  It’s the equal to putting up a sign at a baseball game or the mall.  Online businesses must market to an online audience.

However, many people mistakenly believe that social media need not factor much into the running of an offline business, and this is a serious mistake.  Even if you own a store front with tangible products and physical shopping carts – and not a Café Press website with a “shopping cart” icon in the corner – you should still be meandering through the virtual crowd with the rest of the world.

Why?  Even though your business might be physical, chances are that your customers are spending a lot of time on these social networking sites.  If your store exists in the real world as well, working both the social media angle and the traditional means of advertising can give you a double edge over the competition, and that’s not an advantage that should be glanced over lightly.  Thousands of people do their shopping primarily online these days in the comfort of their homes – in order to have a chance of bringing some of that business through your physical door, you need to be working on the virtual side of things, as well.

So when you sit down in your store in the real world, don’t forget to spend some time thinking about how you can promote your store in the virtual one.  Most people have a foot in the physical and a foot in the virtual nowadays, and you have a serious advantage in being rooted in the physical world.  Online businesses have no stake in the world outside of the Internet, but you can step into the virtual world with ease.  Be sure to take advantage of this position you have as somebody who owns a physical store, and the benefits you’ll reap will be incredible!

Viewing Online Videos is Preferred Over Reading Text

Studies have shown that more and more consumers prefer to watch online videos to reading text.  That translates to: your prospects and customers would rather watch online videos to reading the details on your website.

Can you believe that?

I can…

Online video marketing has exponentially changed the way your customers buy — and how we sell our products or services. The most powerful social media tool out there, video marketing, is speedy and gives your customers and prospects instant gratification.

Observe someone as they scan the internet. Their eyes and energy are directed to the most visually stimulating options on your landing page. Landing pages that have videos are proven to convert better than those that don’t.

Therefore, any business today that is serious about claiming their stake in online real estate should be using online videos to some degree if they are serious about reaching their target audience.

Just how hard is it to get online videos for your business?

Sure, it looks easy and simple enough… The truth is that video marketing can be somewhat complex and requires a little research before slapping up any ole video.

If you are visually demonstrating your product, online video advertising can increase brand recognition and drive traffic to your online and offline business premises.

Immediate gratification is something you can give prospective customers and returning customers by embedding short clips right into your website.

The videos you create can be instructional, commercial, historical or humorous – whatever fits your business needs.  And you don’t have to stop at one type of video – do several of them. In fact, the more videos you have spread around the web, the better.

One thing is for certain; as a business owner, your goal is to accommodate the high video demand by creating online videos for your target audience.

Otherwise, you may never experience the joy of auto-pilot, 24/7, hands-off sales.

Don’t Think Your Customers Are Using Mobile Internet? Think Again…

Many businesses still think their prospects and customers aren’t using their mobile phones to search for local products and services. Because of this, they neglect to mobilize their marketing efforts all together, which is a huge mistake.

Can you believe in the past ten years, U.S. wireless subscriptions have increased by a dramatic 254%, resulting in more active mobile devices than people?

More than 98% of the country has 3G coverage, and there are more 3G customers in the U.S. alone than in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK combined.  In addition to that, economists predict that by 2016, total app downloads will surpass 44 billion.

With these numbers climbing every day, the most market-savvy businesses are rushing to join the mobile marketing community.

Mobile-friendly websites offer significant advantages over traditional advertising techniques, including immediate accessibility and improved customer engagement.

Have you ever tried to pull up your website on a mobile device?  Did it take forever to load? Did it even load at all?

Some businesses don’t even take the time to check to see how their websites are showing up on mobile devices. However, chances are that you are missing out on a lot of potential business.

Potential customers no longer glimpse an ad and jot it down for later follow-up. Instead, through mobile websites, they can instantly obtain company information, place a call, and/or request needed information.

In fact, with Quick Response Code (QR code) technology and barcode scanners preloaded into the most popular phones, there is no need to type in a web address.

One click takes the customer directly to the desired webpage, where convenience and impulse purchasing result in more sales for business owners.

But if your website does not even load on their mobile device, you have pretty much zero chance at getting their business.

Therefore, businesses cannot afford to ignore mobile websites. As far as mobile web users are concerned, out of sight is out of mind.

Get Your Local Business Booming With Online Review Sites

A surprising amount of customers searching the internet are looking for local information.  This opens up a wonderful opportunity for local business owners.

Taking advantage of the massive amount of local searches is not only smart, but it’s a necessity if you want to stand against your local competitors.

However, some businesses are still left scratching their heads trying to figure out HOW they can take advantage of the internet to produce more leads, customers, and sales.

One effortless way that businesses can do this is by signing up with Online Review Sites such as Yahoo Local Listings and Yelp!

When local consumers search for a local business online, sites such as these usually come up as well as independent business websites. However, these review sites pack more power because they contain reviews from the company’s customers right there for everyone to see.

Now, imagine your business listing (with no reviews) sitting right above one of your competitor’s listings which happens to have 38 glowing customer reviews.  Who do you think consumers will go with?

As you can see, building online customer reviews is no longer an option – it’s a necessity.

Reel Them In With Yahoo Local Listings…

This is an awesome site that can help boost your business.  At Yahoo Local Listings business owners can advertise their business information for free.

As a complimentary service to this free Online Review Site, you may list your business in up to five different categories, making your business viewable to a larger amount of searchers.  This is a very high trafficked site and is sure to bring more money and customers to your door!

Yelp! And They Will Come…

Here, you can view feedback about your business as well as post a response. Yelp.com is growing at a ridiculous rate so now is a perfect time to act.  At the rate this Review Site is going, you’ll be sure to bring in more business if you use the site to your advantage.

In fact, your profile may even be listed there already.  If so, all you need to do is make a quick phone call to claim what is rightfully yours. Now you can take control of your own profile and bring in more dough.

Free Internet Marketing Services For Non-Profits

I’m a firm believer in giving. God has given me a gift in this area and what better way to share my gift and offer free help to organizations that need it the most. When I first moved to Orlando almost 2 years ago and didn’t know a lot of people, I found the current church I attend through the internet. I had to search quite a bit to find it though. I also found the first non-profit organization that I volunteered for through the internet as well.  My purpose in offering free internet marketing services to non-profit organizations is very simple. I want to help make these organizations more visible to online seekers and help create a better experience when they do through social media and other media channels.

As I begin to access areas that could use some improvement with many non-profit organizations, these 3 areas came to mind: Social Media, Google Places & Mobile. These 3 services would get many non-profit organizations current with the Social-Local-Mobile movement going on. I will be offering these 3 internet marketing services completely free to non-profits in the Orlando area.

I will start off by targeting local Christian churches & non-profits that offers assistance to homeless families. I will open up to other types of non-profits in and outside of the Orlando area to offer free services to in the near future. So even if your organization doesn’t fit in these 2 categories still submit your information below for help later on. This offer will be pulled when I get in over my head. I will be able to only help some many at one time.

Free Services Include:
- Social: Lifetime Squareberry Pro Account ($350/yr value) <— Very limited # available.
- Local: Google Places Optimization ($300 value)
- Mobile: Mobile Website ($500 value)
